Phongsaly Province
Phongsaly province is located in northern of Laos and has a total area of approximately 16,270 square kilometers. The total population is about 174,000 people and Phongsaly is its capital city.
The province has seven following districts:
- 1. Phongsaly District
- 2. May District
- 3. Khua District
- 4. Samphanh District
- 5. Boon-Neua District
- 6. Boon-Tai District
- 7. Gnot-Ou District
Phongsaly has a border with China in the northwest. Vietnam in the northeast, Luang Prabang province in the southeast and Oudomxay province in the southwest. This is a mountainous province with elevation 500 m to 1,800 m above sea level and large area of forests in Phou Den Din. Phongsaly is also home of numerous ethic groups; they're mainly Tai Dam, Tai Deng, Yao, Hmong, Leu and Khamu. Each group has their own tradition, custom and culture.
Eventhough the province has borders with China and Vietnam but there are no borders open to foreigners yet. Currently people who live along the borders can freely go back and forth and trading between each others. Most of goods in Phongsaly are from China and there are many Chinese companies conduct business there.
Phongsaly can be reached by bus, either from Luang Prabang via Oudomxay.
