Laos is situated in South-East-Asia and shares its borders with five countries. Laos is a landlocked country and has no sea port.The total country area is 91,429 sq miles (236,800 sq km). The highest mountain is Phou Bia 9,242ft (2,817 m).

Almost all of Laos is covered by mountains and dense forest. Only a small percentage of land is suitable for agriculture and farming. And most of these land can be found in the south and along the Mekong river.

Dozens of rivers flow from the mountains and form the tributaries of the Mekong river. The majority of the Lao population have settled in the city and along the Mekong river.

Currently, in Laos there are 16 provinces, 1 municipality and one special zone.
