About Luang Namtha province

Luang Namtha province is located in the northwestern of Laos and has a total area of approximately 9,325 square kilometers. The total population is about 145,000 people and Namtha is its capital city.

The province has five following districts:

  • 2. Muang Sing District
  • 3. Muang Long District
  • 4. Viengphoukha District
  • 5. Nalae District

Luang Namtha has a border with China in the north and Boten is the border's town, Burma in the northwest, Bokeo province in the southwest and Oudomxay province in the southeast. This is a province that has more than twenty ethic groups that live peacefully alongside each others, and has a Nam Ha protecting area covering area of nearly 30% of the entire province.

Recently the government had decided to build a railway link from Boten to Vientiane which will be completed by 2015. If the project is finished traveling from here to Vientiane will be faster and easier.

Luang Namtha is the best place for visitors who like challenging with nature. There are mountains to climb and forest to explore. Trekking in Namtha Province is not only challenging experience is also a generous contribution to help communities with jobs and promote the ecotourism in this area at the time. Namha ecotourist project in co-operation with Lao National Tourism Administration (LNTA) have been working together to protect this area for sometimes.

Near Namtha city there are villages that produce and weave silk, if you like to support local people and like silk material this is the place to visit. Below is the picture of local houses in the Luang Namtha province.
