Currently, the population of Lao's People Democratic Republic is between 5 millions to six millions people and growing at an annual the rate of 2.4%. Laos has the lowest population density in Asia with an average population density of 21 persons per square kilometre.
The three main ethics groups in Laos are Lao lum, Lao Theung (kha) and Lao Sung (hmong). The Lao Lum are the biggest group mostly lives in the big cities and along the mekong river. Lao Theung lives mainly in Boliven plateau while the hmong are living in mountains at Sam Thong-Long cheng. Each ethic group has its own unique tradition, culture and language.

About 85% of population are living in the countryside, and according to 1999 census reported that there were nearly 70,000 more women than men. Life expectency for total population is 55.49 years, for male is 53.45 years and female is 57.61 years (est.2006). Lao people are opened, honest and friendly. Especially, Laos girls are beautiful, trustworthy and hard working. They possess a strong sense of respect and courtesy.
Nop is Lao way of greeting when meet each other or when about to leave and said boodbye. It's also used as an expression of respect and of thanks. Nop is commonly used with monks as an gesture of belief in Buddhism. But with westerner shaking hands is also acceptable.
