Khammouane Province


khammouane province

Khammouane province is located in the middle part of laos and has a total area of approximately 16,135 square kilometers. The total population is about 330,000 people and Thakhaek is its capital city.

The province has nine following districts:

  • 1. Thakheak District
  • 2. Mahaxay District
  • 3. Nongbok District
  • 4. Hinboun District
  • 5. Nhommalath District
  • 6. Bualapha District
  • 7. Nakai
  • 8. Sebangfay
  • 9. Xaybouathong

Khammouane shares borders with Vietnam in the east, Thailand in the west, Bolikhamxay province in the north and Savannakhet province in the south. This province has a fertile land suitable for agriculture. Most of its population are farmers and comprising some minority groups of Phuan, Phoutai, Tahoy, Katang and Kri.


Thakhaek is a commercial center of the province, situated in the bank of mekong river opposite Nakhone Phanom in Thailand. From here people from both countries trading goods with each others daily. Since there is no bridge over the Mekong River yet, cars and trucks have to use big boat as seen in the picture above to transport them.

During french era Thakhaek is one of strategic place for French's official to conduct their duties there. Today there are still some French colonial building left behind.

Money and Banks

The currency of Laos is "Kip". There are no coins in circulation. Notes of Kip are ranging from 50kip to 20,000kip.

Us dollars and Thai Bath are widely accepted in most shops, restaurants and hotels. Major currencies and traveller's cheques in US dollars and pounds sterling can be exchanged at most leading banks.

Accommodation

Thakaek has a wide range of accommodation to suit any budget.
Hotel Riveria is one of the best hotels located on the bank of Mekong River in front of the boat crossing point.

Thakhaek bus station is about 3.5km from town center services going to north and south including going to Vietnam.

Getting to Khammouane province by road is easy, it only take about 6 hours driving south along road number 13 from Vientiane.
