Bokeo Province

Bokeo province is located in the northwestern of laos and has a total area of approximately 6,196 square kilometers. The total population is about 135,000 people and Houay Xay is its capital city.
The province has five following districts:
- 1. Houay Xay District
- 2. Ton Pheung District
- 3. Meung District
- 4. Pha Oudom District
- 5. Paktha District
Bokeo shares borders with Burma (Myanmar) in the north, Thailand in the west along the Mekong river, Luang Namtha province in the northeast, Oudomxay province in the southeast and xaiyabouly province in the south. This is a mountainous province and home of a large number of ethnic minorities people living in Laos. The majority of the tribes that found here have their own customs and culture.
Bokeo is best known for its sapphire mines and the most lucrative job there is gold panning and searching for precious sapphine stones. Beside the sapphire mines the province also famous for its location of "Golden Triangle" where borders of three countries meet.
Getting to Bokeo by air, Lao Ailines flight from Vientiane and Luang Prabang airport daily to its capital city Houay Xay. By road, there are buses leaving Vientiane to Luang Prabang then you need a few buses connection before getting to Houay Xay.
